The promise was simple: your phone becomes your laptop. I actually used this exact setup during my university days to take notes, and at the time, it was an incredibly useful bit of kit. But looking back at it now, the reality of Motorola's Webtop environment was incredibly limited. It was essentially just a desktop Firefox browser running inside a Linux container. In this video, we revisit the hardware, dive into the limited Webtop OS, and discuss why this brilliant concept ultimately failed. We also talk about how back in the day, you could easily root these devices to run proper Linux environments, and how the decaying web has made doing that almost impossible today.
